Sleeping Gods: Primeval Peril is a micro-expansion for the Sleeping Gods board game. It introduces a new area to explore with its own quests, encounters, and challenges. Below is a detailed overview of the rules for this expansion:

Objective

The objective in Primeval Peril is similar to the base game: to explore the world, complete quests, and survive the journey while trying to wake the gods. This expansion adds new content to the base game, providing more opportunities and challenges.

Setup

  1. Game Components:

    • New Map Tile: A map tile that can be integrated into the world map of Sleeping Gods.

    • Adventure Cards: New cards that introduce events, characters, and quests specific to the Primeval Peril expansion.

    • Quest Cards: New quests related to the locations in Primeval Peril.

    • Enemy Cards: Additional enemies you might encounter while exploring the new area.

  2. Initial Setup:

    • Integrate the Map Tile: Add the new map tile to the corresponding location on the world map. The Primeval Peril area will be accessible from certain points in the base game.

    • Shuffle Adventure and Quest Cards: Shuffle the new Adventure and Quest cards into the corresponding decks from the base game.

    • Prepare for Exploration: Ensure that players are familiar with the new locations and potential challenges introduced by the expansion.

Gameplay

Primeval Peril follows the same gameplay mechanics as the base game of Sleeping Gods, with the addition of new content:

1. Exploring the Map

  • Entering Primeval Peril: When you reach a location that leads to the Primeval Peril map tile, you can move your ship into this new area.

  • Exploring Locations: As with other areas of the game, you’ll move your ship, encounter events, and draw Adventure Cards as you explore the new map tile.

  • New Quests: Some locations on the Primeval Peril map will trigger new quests that can be pursued, adding to the narrative and challenges of the game.

2. Encountering Enemies

  • New Enemy Cards: The expansion includes new enemy cards, representing the unique dangers of the Primeval Peril area. When you encounter enemies, resolve combat as you would in the base game.

  • Combat: Use your crew members, abilities, and items to defeat these new enemies. The combat mechanics remain unchanged, but the new enemies may have unique abilities or challenges.

3. Completing Quests

  • Quest Objectives: The new quests will have specific objectives related to the Primeval Peril map tile. Completing these quests will provide rewards, unlock new story elements, or advance the overall narrative.

  • Story Choices: As with the base game, the decisions you make during these quests can influence the outcome and direction of the story.

Winning and Losing

  • Victory Conditions: The victory conditions remain the same as in the base game: to wake the gods and successfully return home. The new content provides additional opportunities to earn points, resources, and complete the main objective.

  • Failure: As with the base game, if your ship is destroyed, your crew is incapacitated, or you fail to complete the main objective before time runs out, you lose the game.

Additional Rules

  • Integrating Content: The content from Primeval Peril should be mixed seamlessly into the base game. The new quests and encounters will be drawn alongside the base game’s cards, providing a more diverse and varied experience.

  • Difficulty: The expansion can introduce new challenges that may increase the difficulty of the game. Be prepared for tougher encounters and more complex quests.

Strategy

  • Explore Thoroughly: Primeval Peril offers new locations and storylines. Make sure to explore these areas fully to get the most out of the expansion.

  • Prepare for Combat: The new enemies may have unique abilities, so ensure your crew is well-equipped and rested before venturing into Primeval Peril.

  • Balance Your Objectives: While the new quests are enticing, don’t lose sight of the main goal of the game. Balance your exploration of Primeval Peril with your overall strategy.
