Official Pan Am Board Game Rules
Pan Am is a strategy board game where players take on the role of airline entrepreneurs in the golden age of aviation. The goal is to build your own airline empire while competing with the iconic Pan Am, which gradually expands its control over routes and buys out smaller airlines.
Objective:
To accumulate the most wealth by expanding your airline, establishing routes, and selling them to Pan Am.
Setup:
Players: 2-4 players.
Game Board:
Place the Game Board in the center. It features a world map with various cities and routes, a stock market, and areas for action spaces.
Place the Pan Am marker on the first spot of the Pan Am expansion track.
Route Deck:
Shuffle the Route Cards and deal two to each player. Place the rest face down to form a draw pile.
Event Deck:
Shuffle the Event Cards and place them face down on the designated spot. These cards dictate historical events and game phases.
Engineer and Directive Cards:
Shuffle the Engineer Cards and place them face down in their area.
Shuffle and place the Directive Cards near the board.
Planes and Money:
Give each player a starting amount of money and a fleet of planes (four starting planes of the lowest tier).
Place the remaining planes in a supply near the board.
Stock Certificates:
Each player starts with one Pan Am stock certificate. The rest are placed in a supply near the board.
Player Order:
Randomly determine the player order. Give the first player the player marker.
Gameplay:
The game is played over seven rounds, with each round consisting of five phases:
Phase 1: Event Card:
Draw and resolve an Event Card. Each event affects gameplay in some way, such as Pan Am expanding or stock prices changing.
Phase 2: Engineer Actions:
Players take turns placing their engineers on action spaces to perform various tasks, such as:
Airport: Purchase an airport, which increases your ability to place routes.
Planes: Purchase new planes, which allow you to establish longer or more valuable routes.
Routes: Claim routes on the board by spending the appropriate plane and matching route cards.
Destination Cards: Draw new route cards that help you establish more routes.
Directives: Draw Directive Cards that provide special one-time abilities or bonuses.
Phase 3: Claim Routes:
Players place their planes on claimed routes, connecting cities and earning income. Routes can only be claimed if you have the necessary plane and matching cards.
Phase 4: Pan Am Expansion:
Pan Am expands its control by randomly purchasing routes. Players with routes on the Pan Am expansion path can sell those routes to Pan Am for a profit. The purchase price is determined by the current stock value.
Phase 5: Stock Purchase:
Players can purchase Pan Am stock with their accumulated wealth. The stock value is determined by the market, and owning more stock increases your chances of winning.
Scoring:
Income: Earn income from your routes each round. This income is used to buy planes, routes, and Pan Am stock.
Stock: Pan Am stock is the primary way to win the game. The player with the most valuable stock portfolio at the end of the game wins.
Winning:
The game ends after the seventh round. Players calculate their wealth by adding the value of their Pan Am stock and remaining cash. The player with the most wealth wins.
Tips for Playing:
Balance Income and Stock: While income is necessary for expansion, owning Pan Am stock is key to victory.
Sell Routes Strategically: Timing when to sell routes to Pan Am can provide significant boosts to your wealth.
Adapt to Events: The Event Cards can change the flow of the game, so be ready to adjust your strategy accordingly.
